The sneaker game is no longer just for the cool kids and the hustlers. The hype and accessibility has expanded to a global scale, where sneakers have now become their own economy. The American sneaker resale market has recently reached a valuation of over $1 Billion.
We’ve put together a list of the 5 most expensive sneakers available on the market right now, using average sale price as a measure. Owning any one of these could see you turning a small profit almost immediately. So without further ado, here’s the list:
5: Jordan 5 Retro Oregon Ducks – $8 000 / R106 000
Released in 2014, these sneakers are another instalment in a series of Oregon-exclusive Jordans. These ultra-rare sneakers earn their status from the fact that they are designed specifically for the University of Oregon football program and their players. These sneakers are often kept under lock and key after players have worn them!
4: Louis Vuitton Jaspers Kanye – $9 999 / R132 500
Released during the peak of Yeezy’s high fashion collab activity, the Kanye West x Louis Vuitton sneaker collection launched with an initial price tag that already gave us chest pains and 8 years later will give you a full-blown heart attack. The full collection has 3 models with 10 colourways all together. Each pair is unique due to slight variations in the materials, to the laces, to the color blocking.
3: Nike Dunk SB Low Paris – $10 000 / R132 500
Released in 2003 for the White Dunk: Evolution of an Icon art event in Paris, these Paris-inspired sneakers were created by French painter Bernard Buffet. Only 202 pairs were ever made, with each pair being unique!
2: Jordan 4 Retro Eminem x Carharrt – $14 000 / R185 500
The holy grail of Air Jordan 4 releases, this ultra-limited edition from Eminem and Carhartt was made and sold with the intention of raising funds for the Literacy Through Songwriting program and raised a total of $227 500! There were only 10 of these sneakers ever made, giving them the ultra-limited edition status.
1: Nike Air Mag – $28 000 / R371 000
The Nike Air Mag is an innovative sneaker inspired by the movie Back to The Future. Marty McFly brought these sneakers onto movie screens back in the 80’s and were brought to life in 2011, then again in 2016. These sneakers have a self lacing feature and a glowing Nike logo sure to get the attention of everybody in the room and on the internet. When these were raffled off in 2016 as a fundraiser for the Michael J Fox foundation, only 84 pairs were available. The high demand and low availability resulted in the sneakers being the price of a decent car!
